Faculty Member, History and Classics
About
Steven Hijmans is associate professor of Roman Art and Archaeology. His main interest is religious art of the Roman imperial period. He has finished an overly large monograph on the Roman sun god, and is now working on religious art in Roman Pannonia. His wife, Margriet Haagsma, is associate professor in the same department, teaching Greek archaeology. They have three daughters.
Steven is notorious for his packed *6 Rome trips, CLASS 459, which he offers every third year (the next one will be in 2013). He enjoys teaching at the UofA because of its excellent programme in Classical Archaeology, its outstanding library, and its strong students. He has supervised/is supervising a number of honours students, numerous masters students, and four PhD students, the first of whom defended her thesis with great success in the Spring of 2011. Steven is very proud of the UofA's highly regarded MA and PhD programmes in Classical Archaeology and is always happy to discuss the possibilities of grad school with interested students.
